WXY & WXYXZ

Complex Corrective Combinations · X-Wave Rules, Fibonacci & Trading Applications

When a single corrective pattern is insufficient to complete a full correction, the market links two or three corrective patterns together via X-waves (connecting waves). The result is a Double Three (WXY) or Triple Three (WXYXZ). These patterns trap traders expecting a simple A-B-C and are critical to understand for accurate wave counting and avoiding premature re-entries.

Official Rules for WXY & WXYXZ

Rule 1: Wave X Structure

✓ Wave X MUST be a 3-wave corrective structure
✓ Typically retraces 50–78.6% of the preceding W (or Y) wave
✗ Wave X CANNOT retrace more than 100% of Wave W
✗ Wave X is NEVER a 5-wave impulse

Rule 2: Wave Y Must Exceed Wave W

✓ Wave Y endpoint MUST be beyond Wave W endpoint
✓ Bearish: Y low must be below W low
✓ Bullish: Y high must be above W high
✗ If Y does not exceed W, the pattern is not yet complete

Rule 3: Corrective Unit Combinations

✓ W, Y, Z can be: zigzag, flat, triangle, or another combination
✓ A triangle can ONLY appear as the FINAL unit (Y in WXY or Z in WXYXZ)
✗ Two zigzags cannot be adjacent without an X-wave between them
✗ Two triangles cannot be adjacent corrective units

Rule 4: Position in Larger Structure

✓ WXY appears in Wave 2, Wave 4, Wave B, or Wave X positions
✓ WXYXZ is extremely rare — usually in very large Wave 2 or Wave 4
✓ After completion, expect a strong trend resumption impulse

WXY Identification Checklist

  • Does Wave W have a clear 3-wave corrective structure?
  • Does Wave X retrace 50–78.6% of Wave W?
  • Is Wave X a 3-wave structure (NOT a 5-wave impulse)?
  • Does Wave X stay within the range of Wave W?
  • Does Wave Y move beyond the end of Wave W?
  • Is Wave Y approximately 100–123.6% of Wave W?
  • Is the structure in Wave 2, 4, B, or X position of the larger count?
  • For WXYXZ: does the second X retrace approximately 50% of Wave Y?
  • For WXYXZ: does Wave Z exceed Wave Y endpoint?
  • After Y (or Z) completes, is there a sharp reversal confirming trend resumption?

Common WXY Mistakes to Avoid

✗ Mistake 1: Buying or selling the X-wave as a new trend.
✓ Fix: The X-wave is ALWAYS a connector. Wait for Y to complete before trading trend resumption.

✗ Mistake 2: Forgetting Wave Y must exceed Wave W.
✓ Fix: If Y stalls before W endpoint, the pattern is not yet complete — stay patient and wait.

✗ Mistake 3: Placing a triangle as the first corrective unit (W).
✓ Fix: Triangles can ONLY appear as the FINAL corrective unit (Y or Z).

✗ Mistake 4: Two consecutive zigzags without an X-wave.
✓ Fix: Every corrective unit MUST be separated by an X-wave. No exceptions.

✗ Mistake 5: Over-labelling every correction as a triple three.
✓ Fix: WXYXZ is rare. Always consider simpler patterns first before assigning a triple three label.

Quick Reference: WXY & WXYXZ Essentials

  • WXY: Double three — two corrective units linked by one X-wave
  • WXYXZ: Triple three — three corrective units linked by two X-waves
  • X-Wave: 3-wave connector retracing 50–78.6% of prior unit — NEVER a new trend
  • Key Rule: Wave Y must exceed Wave W endpoint. Wave Z must exceed Wave Y endpoint.
  • Best Fib: Y = 100–123.6% of W | X = 50–61.8% retrace of W
  • Triangle Rule: Triangles can ONLY appear as the FINAL corrective unit (Y or Z)
  • Trade: Enter at Y (or Z) completion for trend resumption — never at X
